On Naming and Destiny

A nineteen year-old girl walks into a doctor’s office. She marvels at the sight of a collection of Collier's Encyclopedia in the backdrop. “These books must be very important,” she thought to herself.  A year later, she gives birth to a son. Inspired by the collection, she names him after it, hoping he would live to be wise and knowledgeable. Oftentimes, I read how names have influenced the personality and became the destiny of those who bear it. If there's any truth to this, then I do hope my life will embody an encyclopedia. Its generality, its simplicity and brevity, its appeal to both the novice and expert, its breadth of knowledge, its artistic dimensions. I've wondered the kind of life I would live. A life of great scholarship? A life devoted to the service of truth, knowledge and understanding? I don’t know, but one thing I do know is that - to this end I was born, to this end I live, and to this very end I will perish.
